To the Editor:
As I frantically dash from English class, to oboe trio, to track practice, and then home to finish hours of pre-calculus and French homework, I have little time to look back upon the opportunities I have been given as a student at Cleveland Heights High School. Now, with the specter of another levy failure looming over our heads, with the threat to cut these programs, I am forced to reflect back on how much the school has provided for me. Even before I set foot inside the doors of Heights, I had already been working out with the cross-country team for over a month. Under the tutelage of Coach Claude Holland and others, and the support of my teammates, I have grown both physically and mentally. We have learned how to work hard when the time comes, but also how to enjoy a winter distance run through the icy sidewalks of Cleveland Heights. On both the cross-country and the track teams, we know more than just how to win on Saturdays; We have found a family that is pushing us to succeed in life.

The track program is just one of the many families at Heights. Other activities provide the same atmosphere for different students. The track team may remain if the levy fails, but if sports become pay-for-play, some students will not be able to afford these opportunities for friendship and encouragement. It is vital that affordable programs are offered to every student.

Poll is at

http://www.pdkintl.org/kappan/kpol0009.htm

Joe Micheller of CH-UH District provided link to this to Curriculum Advisory Committee.

Here is a appetite whetter from the Poll:

"THE 2000 Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll of the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools documents significant trends in public attitudes and, at the same time, explores new areas that are important in light of current efforts at school improvement. The results should be of interest to school planners at all levels. The turning away from high-stakes testing; the leveling off and the downward trend in support for choice involving private or church-related schools; the fact that lack of financial support has jumped into first place as the biggest problem; the preference for balance in the curriculum over a focus on "the basics"; and the clear support for public schools that is evident throughout the poll are all good news for public school advocates."
